so many people joining the armed forces?
A friend of mine joined the navy and he told me there not even accepting people unless they are coming out of high school do you think so many people are joining just because of lack of jobs or is it video games that glorify war? imo it's video games here you have these top selling war games and millions of kids playing them and want to do it in real life

- War games have always sold well its the economy and college benefits.
- According to the local recruiter here in Modesto they are getting older more educated recruits that have lost their jobs in other fields and still have families to take care of.
- A combination of the lack of jobs and free collage tuition.
- There are multiple reasons that people enlist. I think the main one is financial; the current economy is definitely helping to keep recruitment high. Another reason would be patriotic beliefs. And yes there are those who are attracted by the supposed "adventure" of it. Video games do glamorize war. I served back in the 80's. My reason was mainly financial with a little bit of the other two thrown in.
- I enlisted to defend my country, not because Activision or EA told me to
- Unemployment is 10%. It is much higher for young high school graduates with no education or experience. The entry level jobs that used to be taken by recent high school grads are being taken by older experienced adults who've lost their steady jobs. The military offers three meals a day and a roof over your head, some work experience, decent pay while you serve, and money for college once you get out. There's NOT a lot of other employers offering that right now. People were playing just as many war video games three years ago when recruiters working 80 hours a week couldn't get enough guys to enlist. Video games are not the main factor.
- In the UK there's always a large influx of recruits about 3 or 4 years after a war. I think because they've been young, 13 / 14 or so and then joined at 16. A lot of my seniors joined in 86 (Falklands was 82) again in 95/96, (I joined then and the Gulf was in 91) plus the UK is doing OK on recruitment now - had a big blast in about 2006 ( after Iraq). Only a theory but does stand well.
